Most corrosion at refineries is not caused by
hydrocarbons that are processed but by various
inorganic compounds — such as hydrogen sulfide,
hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and water — used
in the process. Feed-stock contaminants and
process chemicals are two principal sources of these
corrosives. The use of corrosion-resistant materials
