The National Electrical Code® (NEC®) defines
hazardous locations as areas where the possibility
of explosion and fire is created by the presence
of flammable gases, vapors, dust, fibers or flyings.
In pulp and paper processing facilities, hazardous
locations may be present due to gases or chemicals,
which fall under NEC® Class I, due to the presence
of combustible dust, which falls under NEC® Class II,
or from the presence of fibers and flyings from
wood processing, classified as NEC ® Class III.
