Thomas & Betts Products Part Of The New American Home’s Energy-Saving Design

HENDERSON, Nev., Jan. 28, 2014A model home being finished in the suburbs of Las Vegas has been designed to showcase the latest methods for energy efficiency in new home construction. Thomas & Betts products have been incorporated into the design to not only reduce energy costs, but also to reduce construction costs through labor savings.

“We are very proud to have Thomas & Betts’ products play such a major role in The New American Home,” said Ned Camuti, vice president, sales and marketing, for Thomas & Betts Electrical Division. "This home represents the highest standards for residential design and construction, and is a showcase for what can be achieved with innovative thinking.”

The New American Home (TNAH) 2014, in Henderson, Nev., will be the highlight of this year¹s International Builders Show put on by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Leading Suppliers Council and will give contractors and builders a glimpse of what¹s new in energy-saving technology. TNAH 2014 uses some of the latest innovations in green building and construction technology, including a highly advanced energy-efficiency package. The home’s green building features include a solar water heater, photovoltaic panels and closed spray-foam insulation.

The primary product from Thomas & Betts to help TNAH achieve high-energy efficiency is the Carlon® DraftTight® Non-Metallic Box. The DraftTight® box features a gasketed front flange that provides a seal from the box to the back of the dry wall and gaskets over cable-entry points to prevent airflow from entering the house. This saves heating costs in winter and cooling costs in the summer. The Carlon® DraftTight® Non-Metallic Box is also available for ceiling receptacles and for retrofitting in residential remodeling projects.

“Sealing electrical boxes when they are installed results in more efficient heating and cooling of the house,” said Camuti. "By eliminating the need to caulk or seal the boxes after installation, the builder can save about five hours of installation time for a 2,200 square-foot house.”

Carlon® DraftTight® boxes meet the 2012 International Energy Compliance Code (IECC), which is the main insulation code for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

Among other electrical products, Thomas & Betts is also supplying:

• Carlon® Adjust-A-Box® Non-Metallic Electrical Boxes from Thomas & Betts adjust for different wall thicknesses with the turn of a screw. They can be used in a variety of applications, including remodeling and new work, and come in a variety of sizes and orientations. The horizontal box is perfect for kitchens, bathrooms and baseboards, and is ideal for use with ceramic tile. The Carlon® Adjust-A-Box® Non-Metallic Electrical Box was a recipient of the Showstopper Award at the National Electrical Contractors Association Convention in 2013.

Steel City® Floor Boxes from Thomas & Betts are common in commercial installations, and they are increasingly being used in residential construction, as well. They provide the convenience of having an electrical receptacle in the middle of a room, eliminating the need to run an extension cord across traffic areas.  The floor box can be finished with cover plates in a variety of finishes to match any décor.
