Section 406.2 Definitions [Receptacles, Cord Connectors, and Attachment Plugs (Caps)]
Outlet Box Hood. A housing shield intended to fit over a faceplate for flush-mounted wiring devices, or an integral component of an outlet box, or a faceplate or flush mounted wiring devices. The hood does not serve to complete the electrical enclosure; it reduces the risk of water coming in contact with electrical components within the hood, such as attachment plugs, current taps, surge protected devices, direct plug-in transformer units, or wiring devices.
Analysis of the Change
A new definition, “outlet box hood” was added to Article 406. The term was used in two locations 314.15 and 406.9(B)(1), yet a definition did not existed for the term. The definition is now clear and expressive, and although terminology was introduced during in 406.9(B)(1) during the 2011 NEC revision process.
